Until now the only things geckos have inspired are regrettable tattoos and T-shirt logos. Now robots can be added to that illustrious lineup, thanks to researchers at Simon Fraser University. Their machine has the ability to scale walls using tank-like movements. A special adhesive recreates the sticky toes of a gecko, a big improvement on suction cups, claws or magnets. It is fitted with sensors that allow it to detect its surroundings and change direction. No word yet on whether a tiny lizard tongue will be available as an optional extra.
