The clinking of glasses is a universal sign of socialising and a ritual that's recognised around the world. Raising a drink, and a toast, is a centuries-old-custom that's used to celebrate everything from friendship to business deals. Of course in many countries you could get away with a hearty cry of 'cheers', but in others you could just as easily offend your hosts by failing to observe the local customs.
