The Celtic cross signifies - yes, at the back? Correct. Faith. As symbolism and the history of tattos and body art goes, it's a pretty obvious one but done well as with Wayne Rooney here, it can look stunning. Whether you're confusing the symbolism of allegiance to your Celtic faith with allegiance to your wife, we'll leave to theologians. A highly respectable 7/10.On Bing: Images of Celtic cross tattoos

With just a little thought and planning, get it right and a tattoo can look undeniably cool. Sadly, however, they can also be quite the opposite. How do you tell?According to a straw poll of girls we know, it seems to boil down to "patterns are good, faces, names and Chinese characters are bad." Still need help? Tribal tattoos. It's all about the inner warrior, apparently. Clearly if you're a Maori descendant in New Zealand, then it makes perfect sense to bear a Maori tattoo (frequently on the face). For everyone else though, you'd better have a pretty good excuse. Sure, some swirls here and there are fine, they'll look pretty passable too. But expect to be asked "so, mate, what does it mean?" and to answer convincingly. 8/10 for genuine tribal warriors, 2/10 for everyone else.On Bing: Images of tribal tattoostopTribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Tribal tattoos - 2(©Rex Features)Celtic cross tattoosThe Celtic cross signifies - yes, at the back? No prizes for guessing what the dragon stands for. It does what it says on the, er, scales: aggression and power. Of course, if you have to take your shirt off to show people your aggression you'd better be packing a physique to back it up. Great ink, wrong setting scores this one a 5/10.On Bing: Images of dragon tattoostopDragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Dragon tattoos - 4(©Rex Features)Lion tattoosThe lion - and the tiger, depending on your culture - symbolises power, royalty and, possibly, whether you were born between 23 July and 22 August. With the right design, you can see how a lion (or tiger) tattoo on your arm or shoulder could be uber-cool. If, like Robbie Williams here, you're pretty famous and are known to have a relaxed demeanour, you could end up looking more like an outtake from a Narnia movie. Fail. 4/10On Bing: Images of lion tattoostopLion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Lion tattoos - 5(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoosSo the eagle tattoo logic goes something like this: "I'm a man. I'm a free spirit. I need to prove that by getting an eagle." Like the lion / tiger (and everything else, frankly), the wrong design and the eagle makes you laughable. This one though, a distinctly Americanised portrayal of their national emblem, is a good compromise between the tribal feel and a big powerful bird. We like. 8/10On Bing: Images of eagle tattoostopEagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Eagle tattoos - 6(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoosCelebs are often fans of the literary tattoo, with a favourite philosophical quote engraved for all time, often in a language they can't read. We can see the appeal to men like Phil Vickery here, even if it doesn't rate highly on the girls' scoring system. But regardless of the sentiment, would you trust a tattooist to write something you can't read? This could be a beautiful verse... or it could translate as "idiot tourist on gap year". 5/10On Bing: Images of foreign language tattoostopForeign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Foreign character tattoos - 7(©Rex Features)Name tattoosNames. Hmm. You have to be sure that your other half is THE ONE before immortalising her (or him) on your chest. That's probably why mum, dad and kids' names are so popular. Just in case. As for people who get their own names tattooed, buy a business card. Or try a memory course if you need that much help. Ornate kids names à la Beckham though? Yeah, we mostly approve so 7/10.On Bing: More images of David Beckham's tattoostopName tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Name tattoos - 8(©Rex Features)Skull tattoosSymbolically the skull is said to represent the overcoming of an ordeal and strength, or, of course, death. Again, done stylistically, we can see the appeal. Done badly, such as in this 3/10 example, and we're thinking you might never have sex again and / or get written off as an Iron Maiden fan.On Bing: Images of skull tattoostopSkull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Skull tattoos - 9(©Rex Features)Facial tattoosAs with the Maori tattoo, there's something about facial tattoos which is, for want of another phrase, a bit in your face. But if you're Mike Tyson, that's probably the sort of impression you're trying to give. Try covering one of these up at a job interview or first date though... We give it a 4/10 (unless Mike's asking, in which case it's a solid 9/10).On Bing: Images of face tattoostopFacial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)Facial tattoos - 10(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoosThe way we understand it, getting tattoos done can get pretty addictive. But, as with plastic surgery, there comes a point when one more is one more than necessary. No one quite knows what point that is, for a tattoo or plastic surgery, but we're pretty sure that this is it, awkward underwear aside. 1/10On Bing: Images of full body tattoostop'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)'All over' tattoos - 11(©Rex Features)
